CC:Disco!

CC:Disco!

Less chin stroking, more dancing. CC:DISCO's t-shirt really says it all. Playing disco, house and boogie cuts with her heart at the controls, CC triggers a joyous feedback loop that infects the dancefloor. There’s no pretention, only pure feeling.

A mainstay of the Melbourne club scene, CC began connecting with audiences just like the heroes before her - through FM radio. Having presented shows since the age of 15, her weekly slot on local institution PBS FM 'Smoke and Mirrors' is now celebrated as the essential start to every Friday night. All of this air time has primed her to knock out guest spots on NTS, Red Light Radio and Dublab.

In recent years, CC's devotion has seen her graduate to touring DJ and main stage festival act. She's lapped Australia three times in 12 months and ticked a large chunk of her bucket list - opening for Theo Parrish in Auckland, soundtracking the romantic Adriatic Sea at Dimensions and Soundwaves, Boiler Room and Meredith’s coveted Supernatural Amphitheatre, as well as making her mark between Move D and Moodymann at Strawberry Fields, cloaked in a tarp as the crowd rain danced through a belting storm.

Already hosting the likes of Rahaan and Rich Medina, her own night Club Coco is destined to be an important chapter in Melbourne’s illustrious nightlife.

Sunshine

Sunshine

Melbourne DJ Sunshine say's her sets are all about "fun". Earning her stripes in a myriad of different spaces around town, she’s created a sound that is truly her own. What gives her the edge is sheer versatility – you’re just as likely to hear bleeding-edge techno alongside tech house, house and disco all in the space of one beer. Hapno is the sound and it sure ain’t coming from anyone else. As a teenager growing up in Perth, Sunshine first tapped into the illegal rave scene to nurture a growing interest in dance music. Several years on the dance floor led to her first vinyl purchase, exploring the worlds of hip hop, jazz, funk, soul, disco, house and techno. By the time she moved to Melbourne in 1998, she’d amassed her first crate and a dream to DJ. Within a year she’d garnered her first gig, at a small party in Port Melbourne. Naturally, she started playing bars around town, eventually working her way up to sets in the side rooms of the bigger parties such as 33 & 1/3. By 2003, Sunshine had turned enough heads to be offered a weekly 5hr set at Revolver on Saturday mornings, a reasonably prestigious set in the grand scheme of things. She grabbed the chance with both hands and made it her own. 2013 saw the monumental celebration of her 10 year Anniversary. Apart from dominating the Melbourne club scene with her "Happy feel good" DJ sets, Sunshine has also been focusing on production work and in 2013 released her first original track 'Heartbreaker' which became a house anthem and reached #9 in the Aria Club Charts, 'The Only One' peaked at #4 and her new track Twisted is currently killing it on the dance floor. With gigs as large as the Big Day Out and Stereosonic under her belt, the future seems bright for this talented spinner...

Dan Bentley

Dan Bentley

Seth Troxler. Four Tet. M.A.N.D.Y. Mr G. Julio Bashmore. Patrick Topping. Patrice Baumel.

This shortened list is only a few of the talented artists that Dan Bentley has exhibited his skills before.

Dan's eclectic taste and wide range of melodic versatility has earned him set times all around Melbourne's most prestigious venues; such as Revolver, Survivor! Club Of Legends and even his flagship home-made festival, Rabbit Hole.

The man, the myth, the legend; known simply around his circle of friends for 'that guy who plays great tunes', has been making quite a name for himself as an emerging new talent in the underground scene in Melbourne.

His style is often described as a type of 'discho'; raw, ethereal, euphoric sounds to a funky rhythm, reminiscent of Melbourne’s 'Honky Tonks', which, while being far before Dan’s time, has been almost a spiritual influence towards the creative direction for his music.

A classically-trained musician from a young age, Dan focused his talents in almost a sacrificial manner to the Fathers of Melbourne Dance, pushing the limits of aural interpretation and the swaying of one’s hips to the groove. With sets at Strawberry Fields, Let Them Eat Cake, Rabbit Hole and Beyond The Valley, Dan Bentley isn’t a musician to look out for, because you’ll hear him soon enough.

Although his DJ career started late, his passion for music had always been evident. Tanner has been a familiar face in the Melbourne music scene for the past few years, closely admiring his favourite DJ’s and producers who have motivated him to join the industry. Although he wasn’t always spinning the decks, it's always been obvious that he has had the rhythm on the dance floor and a passion for the scene.

Already this year, Sarah has found herself on support for acts such as Francesca Lombardo, Octave One, Ben Pearce, and become a frequent name on line-ups at some of her favourite hideouts around Melbourne - New Guernica, The Carlton Club and Brown Alley just to name a few.

With a love of Chicago House, sexy vocals, percussive drum-beats, almost anything from Detroit and an obsession with $1 CDs from local op-shops, you can guarantee a set from DJ Sarah to be action packed, vibrant and probably accompanied by some great (or not so great) dance moves.

In her spare time Sarah can be found buying records with her rent money, doing concerts for her housemates, or probably still at Revs.

30 / 70 Collective

30 / 70 Collective

Lovingly referred to as a community rather than a band, 30/70 is, at its core, a quintet made up of Allysha Joy, Ziggy, Henry, Thhomas & Jarrod that swells up to an 11 piece ensemble as and when the music calls for it.

The sound of 30/70 is a cosmic mélange of boom-bap dynamics, neo-soul harmonies and jazz-funk licks, all steeped in a deep spiritual tradition reaching from Alice Coltrane to Kamasi Washington.

Despite their influences coming from across the pacific, the 30/70 sound is unmistakably Melbourne. The band came of age in the wake of Melbourne's soul scene hitting global success, a local phenomenon which shone a light on the Northside community and paved the way for a new generation of bands to take this sound and make it their own.

HEXDEBT

HEXDEBT

HEXDEBT have made a thundering entrance into the Melbourne punk and garage scene since their formation in a Brunswick lounge room in June last year. Their songs grip a tension between tightly refined technical prowess and chaotic discordance, executing the balance of both with ferocious confidence. Guitarists Agnes Whalan and Aife Larkin converse in a style of disparate but complementary elements; Whalan's reverberated picking and Larkin’s searing electrical current intertwine in immaculate synchronisation. Bassist Isobel d'Cruz Barnes fingerpicks heavily articulated lines that sustain a strong momentum in each track, with Lucy Fry unleashing a commanding rhythm on drums. Each member contributes to the vocals lines, fronted by Whalan screeching poeticisms about betrayal, conflict, property and bodily ownership, shooting down their transgressors with torrents of blazing condemnation. The result of all of these elements is an absolutely unmitigated force, and has earned them performance slots at Wetfest, The Bank Records Launch, and supporting punk rock legends Cable Ties launch their album in June to a sold out show at the Tote. Their debut E.P, a three-track triumph titled Bitch Rising, is due for release before the end of this year.

The FMLY's live aspect has long been the cornerstone of their efforts, playing close to 300+ shows in the last 4 years, across Australia and even a run to the U.S. Most recently having played a string of festival slots such as Strawberry Fields, Beyond the Valley, By The Meadow and Marmalade Skies - the FMLY's live efforts have come unchallenged, pitting them at the top of their game.

'Slow Drip', Mosé and the FMLY's debut EP, combines the syrupy synth sound with crisp beats and enthralling bass lines. Woven together with master engineers and entirely self-written and produced, it enunciates the FMLY's presence, whilst also shedding some light as to why it has taken so long for them to release music. The EP also sees fitting collaborations with dons Jace XL (Hiatus Kaiyote), N'fa Jones and Cazeaux O.S.L.O. (Man Made Mountain, So.Crates).

'Slow Drip' is just the first step in what is building to be a stellar journey for Mosé and the FMLY.

But not only are Osaka newcomers new the scene - they’re life's relative newcomers too, at only twenty years old.

Drawing inspiration from the golden era of indie rock, front man Edvard Hakansson began piecing together his body of work little by little while he was still in high school. After a sojourn to the UK, he returned to home soil with a fresh attitude and a fierce appetite: "Gilbert [Hulme], (bass/keyboard) and I listened really critically, and decided that the songs weren't what we wanted. So we basically took every single song apart to a bass line or guitar part and rewrote them maybe four times until we felt okay playing them to someone else. Once we brought them to Mal (Besley) and got the tick of approval, we recorded them over two weeks at Soundpark in Northcote and in our attic in Windsor."
